What Is Acute Bronchitis?

Acute bronchitis is a common condition both in the summer and winter months that will bring patients into emergency rooms, urgent care centers, and to primary care offices.  Acute bronchitis is characterized by the following symptoms may be somewhat varied in its presentation, but often include cough, fever, chills, sore throat, and fatigue.

What Causes Acute Bronchitis?

Acute bronchitis can be caused by either a viral or bacterial illness.  Our medical providers can determine the most likely cause of the illness and the most effective course of treatment.  The viral illness may require a cough suppressant, antihistamines, decongestants, steroids, or breathing treatments.  A bacterial infection may require all of the above medications in addition to an antibiotic regimen specifically selected to target the bacteria causing the condition.  Typical treatment will vary, but will usually last 5-7 days.

During the acute illness, the patient is considered to be contagious and may need to stay home from work or school for several days.  Over the counter cough medicines and decongestants may help, but if these medicines are ineffective after 3 days, more powerful prescribed medications are often necessary.
